Shakti is proud and honoured to have the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, HELEN CLARK, as our Patron. She has known Shakti from inception and has been supportive of the work we do within New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities as well as the global cause of women working against violence. Helen Clark is currently the head of UNDP, at the United Nations, New York.

About Shakti Melbourne

Shakti Migrant & Refugee Women's Support Group Melbourne Inc. was incorporated in Melbourne on October 27, 2011, following the formation of a Steering Group led by local women, and the founding members and senior members of Shakti New Zealand.

Shakti Melbourne is backed by New Zealand based national, community organization Shakti Community Council Inc which specializes in providing culturally competent crisis intervention services for women and families of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origins.

The goal of Shakti Migrant & Refugee Women's Support Group Melbourne Inc. is to promote the well-being, safety and human rights of women of Asian, African and Middle Eastern origins based in Melbourne and the surrounding regions.

Activities of Shakti Melbourne will include the following:

Culturally sensitive telephone counselling
Drop in Service - Assessment & Action Plan
Advocacy
Community based support/Safe accommodation
Case Management / Case work - culturally competent
Referral and support with legal, housing, health, Centrelink, counselling, etc
Domestic/Family Violence Awareness, intervention and prevention workshops
