She has known Shakti from inception and has been supportive of the work we do within New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities as well as the global cause of women working against violence. Helen Clark is currently the head of UNDP, at the United Nations, New York.

Shakti Community Council Inc is a non-profit, community organisation providing social services for Asian, African and Middle Eastern communities in New Zealand.

Working with Shakti will provide you with a good insight into various ethnic communities as well as the mainstream, Maori and Pacific Island communities in New Zealand. We consider Passion and Commitment towards the cause of bringing about social change as the single most deciding factor for employment. Of course, that means dedication and determination to work from the heart, especially to help achieve the overall well-being of disadvantaged ethnic women and children and thereby ethnic families.

We have vacancies as follows:

COORDINATOR (Tauranga) (full-time basis)  (16/06/2010 21:49:04)

This position is based in Tauranga. The Coordinator will be required to do case management, advocacy, network, manage daily operations of centre and staff.

Skills Required:
- Prefer candidate with educational background either in Women & Gender Studies, Law, Counselling, Social Policy or Social Work
- Basic understanding of managing a centre
- Gender analysis
- Be multi-lingual (with knowledge of at least one Asian, African or Middle Eastern language apart from English)
- Able to meet contractual obligations
- Computer skills
- Telephone skills
- Administration skills
- Understanding of cross cultural environment
- Full driving license
- Ability to communicate to different stakeholders

Qualities:
- Have a passion to work with women and children
- Ideally, have a feminist perspective
- Have a vision for better future for ethnic women and families in New Zealand
- Able to advocate and stand up for womens issues
- Able to work in Human Rights area

Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience in working with womens organisations. Past experience is an advantage. Training will be provided.

Human Resource Officer (Full-time position)  (16/06/2010 21:45:20)

The Position is based in Auckland and will be full time for 35 hours a week. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Skills Required:
- Have excellent administration skills
- Ideally have a degree in human resource management or business administration
- Have good communication, organisation and conflict resolution/management skills
- Relevant work experience in office administration and human resource
- Ability to coordinate, motivate and work with people
- Good knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint
- Able to think laterally and innovatively
- Have good command of spoken and written English
- Knowledge of New Zealand Human Resource Policies
- Ability to build good interpersonal relationship with staff, clients, networks and other relevant stakeholders.
- Be Multi-lingual (with knowledge of at least one ethnic language apart from English)
- Be empathetic towards working with women and children
- Participate in crisis call response work for women seeking support
- Full driving license required

ENGLISH TEACHER  (17/12/2009 12:03:05)

SETAC Ltd is looking for a qualified English Language Teacher to teach a class of 15 women students over a 12 week period. The course will be delivered 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, Monday to Friday from 10 am to 12 pm. Position is based at Henderson, Waitakere and there will be three such batches a year.
Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Skills Required:

- Preference will be for candidates who will have an understanding of women surviving domestic violence
- Able to work in a cross cultural environment with diverse refugee and migrant women
- CELTA Qualified.

We are looking for an efficient student/ graduate to assist in working with ethnic youth and developing and facilitating support programmes for ethnic children in family violence.

Position is paid part-time/fulltime: 14 to 28 hours a week, 9am-4pm. Hours are negotiable.

SHAKTI SEEKS VOLUNTEERS  (15/04/2009 17:01:19)

Shakti Community Council is looking for efficient and enthusiastic women volunteers representing Asian, African and Middle Eastern communities. Positions are based in Tauranga, Christchurch and Auckland to assist Shakti's staff in providing support services to ethnic women and children victims of domestic violence in areas of language translation, Crisis pick-up, telephone counselling etc.

Interested volunteers should ideally have an understanding of womens issues, have a passion to work in the Human Rights area, able to advocate for women's rights / issues.
Hours are negotiable. Training and transport expenses will be provided.
