About the Artists

Sandhya Pillai

Sandhya’s stage appearance started from the age of 3y and her first bharathanatyam performance was at the age of 5y. Sandhya’s passion for Indian classical dance has evolved over the years from Bharatanatyam to Kuchipudi and Mohiniyattam. Her mother, Jalaja Pillai, taught her the first dance steps. Sandhya’s formal training in the various styles was under the guidance of Mary Sebastian (folk), Radhika Shekar (bharatanatyam), Mythili Venketachalam (kuchipudi) and Latha Mohan (mohiniyattam). She currently continues to further her learning of bharathanatyam under the tutelage of Anuradha Ramkumar, Anuradha’s School of Classical Dance, Auckland. She has choreographed and performed over 50 solo and group works in all three dance forms in a number of countries including New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Africa. She has presented both stage and televised performances on national television. She has been involved in organisation committees for ethnic and multicultural performances such as the Otago Medical School International Night (Dunedin) and the Onam festival (Christchurch City). A number of these presentations have been for charity fundraisers for organisations such as the Dunedin Women’s Refuge, temples and local schools.

Sandhya is a mother of 2 young children and despite family and professional commitments, her devotion to dance continues such that she continues to learn, choreograph, perform and encourage the younger generation to foster a love for the divine art form of dance.

SETAC Second Chance Classroom Project (17/12/2009 12:39:14)

We are now in the process of setting up classrooms (City Council approved) at the programme site based at 153 Rathgar Road, Henderson. However, we do not have sufficient funds and resources to build the same.

To set up a 3-classroom unit, we are keen to bring together the local community who can support us through materials, fittings, labour and a builder-supervisor. We aim to make this a community-initiated building project. Due acknowledgements will be made for donations made, financially or in the form of building materials, on our sponsorship board located at the entrance of our premises. We seek volunteers and donations.

Your participation as an individual and as an organization/business can make a gigantic difference to the lives of the vulnerable women and their children wanting to move on with their lives, while recovering from the trauma of family violence.

We require the following items for the Classroom Project which began on December 11, 2009:

. Building materials: Concrete, timber, GIB wall linings, aluminium windows, doors, paint, insulation materials
