Shakti Asian Women's Safehouse Inc. (2 Refuges) - Auckland

History

Shakti Asian Women's Safehouse Inc is at the core of the Women's Unit of Shakti Community Council Inc. It has its foundations in the Shakti Asian Women's Support Group set up in 1995 by migrant women for the welfare of Ethnic Migrant and Refugee Women in New Zealand.

The first Shakti Asian Women's Safehouse became operational in 1998 followed by a second in 2003. The Safehouse caters to women of Asian, Middle Eastern and African ethnicity. The focus is on advocating against Domestic Violence, providing safe and confidential Refuge to women victims and their children, educating them about their rights and working towards their self-empowerment.

Mission Statement

To help empower women live life free of fear and violence

Safehouse or Refuge is a safe and confidential sanctuary for women and their children torn by Domestic Violence. They can stay in the Safehouse for a temporary period, secure their legal rights, go through the process of healing and improve on their life skills until they feel empowered enough to make their own choice of lifestyle. Shakti has set up Non-PR Safe House and PR Safe House for ethnic women.

Non-PR Safe House

Provides safe crisis accommodation to women and their children who are victims of Domestic Violence and do not have residential status or work permits. They include women who have been sponsored into the country through marriage and subsequently abandoned as a result of domestic violence.

PR Safe House

For Citizen and Permanent Resident (PR) women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.

Services include

Accommodation

Safehouse provides temporary shelter in a protected and confidential location with basic daily necessities.

Legal and counselling services

If the women or their children needs counselling, in addition to support and advocacy, we refer them to counsellors, who have an understanding of ethnic cultures and family violence and are appropriately qualified and trained. The session may be supervised if it in best meets the interest of the client and if she requests so.

Advocacy

We advocate for the rights of women in domestic violence, be it legal, immigration matters, police, courts, housing, Work & Income, IRD, Tenancy, etc

Life Skills / Therapy / Workshops

The Safehouse provides therapeutic workshops that improve self-esteem and confidence and life skills programmes including driving and English language lessons. Women are encouraged to explore their skills and talents as a means to becoming self-reliant. Positive Parenting workshops are also offered for mothers bringing up their children in New Zealand . Domestic Violence Awareness workshops are also held.
