Shakti is proud and honoured to have the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, HELEN CLARK, as our Patron. She has known Shakti from inception and has been supportive of the work we do within New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities as well as the global cause of women working against violence. Helen Clark is currently the head of UNDP, at the United Nations, New York.

Safehouse: Shakti has four ethnic women's refuges in New Zealand. Please donate generously to the cause of ensuring safety to vulnerable women and children. Items needed include beds, bed linen, duvets, kitchen ware, groceries, sanitary products, toiletries, etc. Thank you.

History

Shakti Legal Advocacy & Family Social Services Inc. (formerly the Shakti Migrant Resource Centre) has its origins in the Shakti Asian Women's Support Group founded in 1995 by migrant women The Group set up the Shakti Migrant Resource Centre in the year 2000 with the objective of providing advocacy and settlement service for all migrants. The Centre was reconstituted as Shakti Family Settlement & Social Services Inc. under the Shakti Community Council Inc. and has been recently renamed as Shakti Legal Advocacy & Family Social Services to incorporate legal and counseling services. New Services include a Youth Unit.

Settlement services for migrants

We provide settlement assistance to all migrants through information, advocacy and social services in a culturally supportive manner so as to enable them settle and integrate well within New Zealand society.

Advocacy

We provide ongoing support, referral and advocacy services to Ethnic people with all Government departments including Immigration, Work & Income, Police, Inland Revenue, Health, Human Rights, Courts, etc.

Drop in Centre for Ethnic People

We welcome migrants and refugees of all cultural and ethnic background and offer relevant support to them. We offer couple counseling and other support services, besides positive parenting programmes.

Casework

Each case is discussed on a confidential basis following which a specific needs assessment programme is proposed and assistance provided.
