Shakti is proud and honoured to have the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, HELEN CLARK, as our Patron. She has known Shakti from inception and has been supportive of the work we do within New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities as well as the global cause of women working against violence. Helen Clark is currently the head of UNDP, at the United Nations, New York.

Shakti Community Council Inc provides multifarious services through its member organizations in Auckland and nationwide:

Shakti Asian Women's Centre Inc
Established in Auckland, provides 24-hour crisis call service (0800 SHAKTI) for ethnic women in domestic violence, drop in centre for women, outreach social work, counselling, legal referral, interpreting, life skills programmes, ACC advocacy, domestic violence intervention training for community, and advocacy. An important initiative of this centre is to train women advocates in the community in the area of gender equity and social change.

Shakti Asian Women's Safehouse Inc.
Two Refuges (Auckland) offers culturally appropriate refuge/shelter for ethnic women wanting to escape domestic violence / family violence. Services provided are safe and confidential and includes self-empowerment programmes, therapy, counselling, legal support, health referral and advocacy in housing and immigration, ACC advocacy, life skill education and programmes to promote confidence and self-reliance.

Shakti Legal Advocacy & Family Social Services Inc.
In Auckland this centre offers settlement and social services for migrant and refugee families in Auckland region. Casework and family support services include family violence prevention, couple counselling, family conferencing and child abuse prevention. Recently the centre has added a youth unit a counselling unit and legal advocacy services. For youth services click Youth Unit

Shakti Education Training & Advisory Company (SETAC) Ltd.
An NZQA-approved training and educational arm of Shakti which is in the process of developing relevant programme and training for migrants according to New Zealand labour market and facilitate gainful employment and integration. Programmes include Second Chance for ethnic women wanting to upksill themselves and integrate within the wider community.

Shakti Ethnic Women's Support Group-Central Region Inc.
Refuge provides domestic violence intervention support, crisis response, English language classes, road safety programmes and other life skills programmes for ethnic women in North Island central. A drop-in service centre for women is also offered. Services cover Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and Waikato regions.

Shakti Ethnic Women's Support Group, Christchurch Inc.
Refuge offers services which include information and advocacy, culturally-appropriate domestic violence crisis response, refuge accommodation, referrals, life skills education programmes. A drop-in service centre for women is also offered Services are provided to South Island.

Project Women Against Violence:
This is an overseas initiative of Shakti launched by survivors of domestic violence and volunteers. The main intent of this project is to work with sister organisations in Asian, Middle Eastern & African countries towards instilling a positive change in cultural perspectives of domestic violence/family violence within the communities they work with. This project is supported by KOHA-PICD under NZAID. Shakti is also a member of the Council for International Development (CID)
