Our Patron, Helen Clark |
Shakti is proud and honoured to have the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, HELEN CLARK, as our Patron. She has known Shakti from inception and has been supportive of the work we do within New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities as well as the global cause of women working against violence. Helen Clark is currently the head of UNDP, at the United Nations, New York.
Thank you, Helen!

Shakti celebrates International Womens Day! (15/04/2009 13:54:18)
Shakti celebrated International Womens Day 2009 on March 7 & 8th with an international conference that brought together like minded womens NGOS from Australia and New Zealand, besides representatives of various government departments, ministries and other stakeholder groups. We had participants from Immigrant Womens Speakout Association, Immigrant & Refugee Womens Human Rights Council of Australia, Victorian Immigrant & Refugee Womens Coalition, Multicultural Centre for Womens Health and Immigrant Womens Support Service, Queensland. Two of our founding trustees who are based in Australia also joined us for the historic event.
The main agenda behind this Conference and the meetings that followed was to exchange information about the status of migrant and refugee women in both countries and discuss and prepare towards reporting at the next CEDAW session.
Representatives from Unifem and Pacific Womens Watch (NZ) were also present and made presentations.
The Seminar which was held at Ferndale House, Auckland was also privileged to have the Waitakere City Council CEO, Vijaya Vaidyanath as the guest speaker for the event.
Workshops were also held on the following topics: Migrant wives & Violence against women, Health & mental health, Housing, Employment & Education, Access to justice & trafficking, Women in leadership & governance.
The Seminar was attended by 75 participants and was a huge success.
