History

Shakti Asian Women's Centre Inc. has its foundations in the Shakti Asian Women's Support Group set up in 1995 by migrant women for the welfare of Ethnic Migrant and Refugee Women in New Zealand . Shakti Asian Women's Centre became operational in 2000, serving the needs of Asian, Middle Eastern and African women. The focal point of operations is a 24 hours Crisis Call Service which service as a prompt, direct response to Domestic Violence. The Centre also provides Advocacy and Social Outreach work in a safe and culturally appropriate environment beside advocating on behalf of women's issues, making referrals and lobbying for social change.

Services include

•  24-toll free nationwide Crisis Call and Intervention Services

24-hour response to Domestic Violence. If you and your children are in a situation of Domestic Violence or wish to break away from the oppressive bonds that bind you, you can seek our support by simply calling us or dropping in. Our Ethnic staff and volunteers will attend to your needs, offer comfort and make appropriate referrals, helping you help yourself towards leading a self-reliant, violence-free life. •  Drop in Centre

The Shakti Asian Women's Centre is a Drop-In Centre for Ethnic Women who wish to interact with other Ethnic Women and seek the path to empowerment. We believe, empowered women means empowered families

•  Information, Advocacy and referral services

We provide information and advocacy services. We advocate on behalf of women's issues with government and non-government agencies. We advocate women's rights and the rights of Ethnic Women in New Zealand . Our advocacy support includes, Work & Income, Housing, Legal rights and Refuge

•  Interpretation services in different Ethnic Languages.

We have staff and volunteers who speak various ethnic languages

•  Legal Support

Our legal support staff makes you aware of your rights as a woman, wife and mother in New Zealand and provides choices for you to make your own decision. Legal rights include, Protection Order, Custody, Separation & Divorce, Furniture Order, Tenancy Rights, Immigration matters, etc.

•  Counseling

Our Counselors will offer you emotional support and comfort through difficult times and assist in improving your self-esteem.

•  Social Outreach work

Our Social Worker reaches out to women and single mothers in need of support, be it physical, emotional or logistical, within their homes.

•  Life skill development project

Women can book for subsidised driving lessons and participate in various workshops

•  ACC Advocacy projects

We provide information and advocacy services with regard to Accident Compensation in case of injury including rape.

•  Health workshops

The Women's centre frequently holds workshops related to women's health issues and conducts community awareness in the area of domestic violence and family violence.
