Shakti in Ōtepoti, Dunedin, offers a drop-in centre and a range of support services for migrant and refugee women and families. Our services include:
- Culturally Responsive Advocacy & Case Management—Our caseworkers come from various cultural backgrounds and languages and provide tailored support to enhance clients’ safety and empowerment.
- Counselling Service: Our multilingual, culturally responsive counselling support is available either in person or remotely (online or by phone), making it easy to access wherever you are.
- Language Support: Our team includes staff from various cultural backgrounds and languages. Interpretation support is also available when needed.
- Life Skills Program (LSP): – Equips clients with communication skills, builds confidence, and provides education about New Zealand’s culture, legal system, and domestic violence awareness
- Immigration Support: Our experienced immigration lawyers helps clients with immigration issues.
- Legal Aid: We collaborate with trusted law firms to offer legal aid for matters such as Protection Orders and other legal concerns.
- Community Risk Management (CRM): This structured program supports long-term safety and independence for clients and their children, including home safety alarms and safety watches.
- Youth Advocacy: Youth specific projects run by youth for youth, including crisis intervention and domestic violence awareness programs.
- Collaboration with Key Organisations: We work closely with other women’s refuges, hospitals, police, and other agencies to strengthen support for our clients.
We also assist with advocacy in the following areas:
- Housing and emergency accommodation
- Work and Income (WINZ)
- Medical and health services
- Court processes and interactions with the Police and Legal system
Please note: We do not currently operate a refuge in Dunedin / Hamilton. However, we offer a drop-in centre and can help arrange transfers to Shakti safe houses in other regions if needed. Both LSP and counselling services are offered remotely.
