About Shakti Regional Offices

As a leading agency for domestic violence intervention and advocacy, Shakti is dedicated to providing culturally appropriate services, including safe housing for migrant and refugee women from Asian, African, and Middle Eastern backgrounds in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Shakti Women’s Refuge Trust operates nation-wide, with branches in:

  • Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland
  • Te Whanganui a Tara, Wellington
  • Tauranga
  • Kirikiriroa, Hamilton

  • Ōtepoti, Dunedin

Auckland

Shakti in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland offers a drop-in centre, two refuges and a range of support services for migrant and refugee women and families. Our services include:

  • Immigration Support: Our experienced immigration lawyer, who has been with Shakti for nearly 20 years, helps clients with immigration issues.
  • Legal Aid: We work with trusted law firms that provide legal aid for Protection Orders and other legal matters.
  • Counselling Services: Counselling is available at our drop-in centre and remotely (online or by phone), making it easy to access mental health support.
  • Multilingual Staff: Our team includes staff from various cultural backgrounds and languages. We offer interpretation support when needed.
  • Learning Support Programs (LSP): Selected courses are available locally and remotely, with learning support provided.
  • Home Safety Measures: We offer safety alarms, help with emergency contact planning, and work with the Police to improve client safety.
  • Community Risk Management (CRM): This structured program supports long-term safety and independence for clients and their children.
  • Collaboration with Key Organisations: We work closely with women’s refuges, hospitals, immigration services, and other agencies to strengthen support for our clients.

Hamilton

Shakti in Kirikiriroa, Hamilton, offers a drop-in centre and a range of support services for migrant and refugee women and families. Our services include:

  • Culturally Responsive Advocacy & Case ManagementOur caseworkers come from various cultural backgrounds and languages and provide tailored support to enhance clients’ safety and empowerment.
  • Counselling Service: Our multilingual, culturally responsive counselling support is available either in person or remotely (online or by phone), making it easy to access wherever you are.
  • Language Support: Our team includes staff from various cultural backgrounds and languages. Interpretation support is also available when needed.
  • Immigration Support: Our experienced immigration lawyers helps clients with immigration issues.
  • Legal Aid: We collaborate with trusted law firms to offer legal aid for matters such as Protection Orders and other legal concerns.
  • Community Risk Management (CRM): This structured program supports long-term safety and independence for clients and their children, including home safety alarms and safety watches.
  • Youth Advocacy: Youth specific projects run by youth for youth, including crisis intervention and domestic violence awareness programs.
  • Collaboration with Key Organisations: We work closely with other women’s refuges, hospitals, police, and other agencies to strengthen support for our clients.

Please note: We do not currently operate a refuge in Hamilton. However, we offer a drop-in centre and can help arrange transfers to Shakti safe houses in other regions if needed. Both LSP and counselling services are offered remotely.

Shakti in Te Whanganui a Tara, Wellington, offers a drop-in centre, a refuge, and a range of support services for migrant and refugee women and families. Our services include:

Shakti in Ōtepoti, Dunedin, offers a drop-in centre and a range of support services for migrant and refugee women and families. Our services include:
