Culturally safe Counselling and Wellbeing services
Shakti Counselling and Wellbeing Services is a core service of sister entity Shakti Community Council Inc., a national not-for-profit community organisation set up in New Zealand in 2003. It has its origins in the Shakti Asian Women’s Support Group Trust set up in 1995.
We specialise in culturally competent counselling, well-being and safety programme services to Asian, African and Middle Eastern women and their children. Our Counsellors and Facilitators speak multiple Asian, African and Middle Eastern languages.
Our services cover Auckland region, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Wellington region, and Christchurch and Dunedin in South Island.
Our Counselling offers a safe and confidential space for you to talk to professionally qualified therapists who will listen to you and help you work through your emotional distress, worries, issues and problems. These issues may arise out of the experiences you have been through or on-going situations of conflict, abuse or violence.
Ministry of Justice accredited Safety Programmes for Victims
Shakti offers court-referred Protected Persons Safety Programmes for women and their children who are victims of violence, seeking Protection Order or have been granted a Protection Order by a New Zealand Court. We provide assessment, safety planning and Group / Individual Programme for Asian, African and Middle Eastern women and children. This Safety Programme is offered in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and Dunedin at this stage.
Setac Ltd
Setac Ltd (Shakti Education Training & Advisory Trust) was set up by Shakti in 2003 to develop and deliver life skills programmes for vulnerable women as well as function as an in-house training and development wing of Shakti. The main activities of this entity are currently related to research, delivering Best Practice Guidelines as well in-house training all year round to staff and volunteers working with the Shakti group of entities.
SDETAT Trust
This entity was set up in 2021 with the aim of promoting sustainable development of vulnerable women and families while at the same time advocating for a sustainable environment. The brand name Sustinnoworx (Sustainable Development Works) was developed with the intent of achieving these goals. Activities include two shops, one promoting organic groceries for healthy living and the other functioning as an upcycling shop for pre-loved goods including clothing. The goal is to provide training pathways towards employment and self-reliance for vulnerable women who are managing the shops, while also reducing landfill and textile waste and promoting environmental sustainability.
